The old Villard Theatre, Villa Park, Illinois
I’ve seen seedlings sprout in neglected gutters, but this is the first bush I’ve seen grow in a neglected chimney? But maybe this wasn’t the chimney?
The Villard Theatre opened in 1927, housing a 750 seat theatre with a bowling alley in the basement. By the end of the 1950s, both the theatre & the bowling alley were closed. In 2006, the auditorium was demolished, leaving the lobby & the storefronts. Currently, people are trying to develop it as retail shops on the ground level with condo housing above, but that doesn’t seem to be moving along very quickly. But then, the old Ovaltine factory took eons to get developed, & it’s now a nicely productive member of society. 🙂 The Villard Theatre is pretty much across the street from the old Ovaltine grounds. It’s also across the street from the old Villa Park Post Office, which is also in rather sorry shape & is for sale. (Just in case anyone is interested in investing in Villa Park.)
