OK, so technically, last night’s full moon wasn’t a full moon. That happened the night before. But if it looks like a duck……..walks like a duck……quacks like a duck……it’s a full Harvest Moon!
My cousin is a retired NASA guy who now works with inner city kids teaching high school physics this year. Since Tom Skilling (wonderful weatherguy) was calling for Ma Nature to cooperate, we gathered all the kids after sundown, took ’em outside, & showed ’em that you “don’t need no stinkin’ telescope” when it comes to the moon. All that’s needed are cameras and/or binoculars & they can be on the relatively cheap side.
These pics were taken with my old Canon SX PowerShot 20IS on a tripod. (OK, yeah, ya do need a tripod.) Canon motors can be grumpy & die when pushed, but I pushed the envelope & did an 80X zoom (it prefers to stay at 20X or less) & the Canon came thru for me. Then we put the pic on my laptop & had the kids label the various features they had learned about while we all had a late night barbecue. It was a fun night.
